We advocate for evidence-based policies that reduce the harms of the criminal legal system and promote justice, community safety and healing.

A SAFE & JUST MICHIGAN FOR ALL

A SAFE & JUST MICHIGAN FOR ALL

:: our work ::

Evidence-Based Sentencing

Taking away someone’s innate freedom by incarcerating them is a drastic measure that should be done only when the benefits outweigh the harm. Following evidence-based practices to guide effective sentencing will build thriving communities.

Access & Opportunity for All

The true impact of the criminal legal system reaches far beyond the walls of a prison cell. Once someone has been arrested, policies should support their community reintegration, not impede it with roadblocks to things like housing, employment, education and economic opportunity.

Income-Blind Justice

Singling out the wealthy from the poor in our criminal legal system only serves to fuel the root causes of harm in our communities. Everyone should have the same rights, burdens and privileges, no matter how much money you have — or don’t have.

Restorative Accountability

When the goal is community safety but our only tool is punishment, our efforts are self-defeating. We must reinvest in services that support people’s needs before harm is caused, instead of causing further harm and expecting a different outcome.

Past Successes

For over 20 years we have pursued reform strategies built on evidence-based practice for public safety and Michigan’s over-reliance on incarceration. Our advocacy won significant parole reform and passed the Clean Slate Act and other reforms from the tough-on-crime era in Michigan.
