Updated: Automatic Expungement FAQ – February 12, 2025

The state of Michigan implemented an automated expungement system on April 11th, 2023. The impact of this new law is still being felt throughout the state, but many still have questions about how this new law impacts them personally.

How did we get to this point?:

Prior to April 11, 2023, individuals seeking an expungement of past convictions had to petition the courts to have those offenses expunged. This changed when the second phase of Michigan’s Clean Slate Act went into effect on April 11, 2023. This process will allow for convictions to be expunged through an automated system. This system was established and is run by the State of Michigan, in conjunction with the existing network of courts around the State.
